Activity Intolerance in Relation to Fall Risk

Activity Intolerance in Relation to Fall Risk

There are instances whereby a patient’s functionality changes as they embrace the aging process. This is evidenced by fatigue or weakness, blood pressure and an abnormal heart rate whenever an activity is recorded, ischemic or arrhythmic changes on the electrocardiogram, and dyspnea.h

Action Against Change in Activity

In order to keep the patient in good health and maintain activity in their organs, a care giver should take certain measures.

  1.       Ensure that the vital signs remain well within the established parameters.
  2.       Modify activity to match the decreased activity tolerance of the patient
  3.       Assist the patient to perform day-to-day activities
  4.       See to less pain and discomfort of the patient as they perform activities

Before taking any action, the nurses should ensure that they assess the patient’s mobility and physical activity. This will enable you to obtain a baseline data. It is also advisable that you determine the kind of medication that the patient is currently on. Certain medicines for instance tranquilizers, sedatives, relaxants, beta blockers, calcium channel blockers are known to trigger fatigue as a side effect.

One should establish the need for supplemental oxygen to help the patient perform activities by getting the patient’s oxygen saturation and vital signs. It is also best that the patient is encouraged to perform more activities gradually as you allow for frequent rest periods. Through ample rest, the patient’s tolerance for activity is increased.

It is highly advisable that activities are scheduled when the patient feels energetic the most. The patient’s efforts towards performing an activity should be acknowledged and encouraged. This reduces chances of depression which is common in the elderly especially when they lose functionality. Energy conservation techniques such as performing tasks while sitting, pushing instead of pulling, resting after meals before handling a new task, changing positions frequently and sliding instead of lifting should be encouraged. These techniques reduce the amount of oxygen required by the body hence enabling prolonged activity.  Adaptive equipment should also be introduced as they reduce energy consumption and help the patient to gain more independence when handling tasks.
